The 2020 World Car Awards now have a Top Three shortlist. The final three across all 5 categories of the annual global awards programme were announced today. The Top Three in the world for the most prestigious World Car of the Year 2020 see an unprecedented twofer by one brand, with the Mazda3 and Mazda CX-30 making the cut. As one of the jurors, this reporter is also excited to see three EVs make the cut across various categories. The SUV domination we have seen the past few years has also been somewhat diminished this year.

The World Car Awards are the most recognised, sought after and prestigious prize in the global automobile industry. The awards are now in their 16th year, and the reigning World Car of the Year is the Jaguar I-Pace - that created history in 2019, when it won not only World Car of the Year, but also snagged the World Green car and the World Car Design of the Year trophies. That was a first - a triple win by one single car. In the past, Mercedes-Benz has also won 3 trophies in a single year, when the Mercedes-Benz C-Class won World Car of the Year 2015. The Mercedes-AMG GT had won World Performance Car and the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupé had won for Design - in the same year.

Ex-Jaguar Design Director Ian Callum celebrates with the 2019 World Car of the Year Trophy.

The 2020 World Car programme sees 86 jurors from 24 countries across the world voting to pick the most deserving winners. The Road to World Car began at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2019 where the current winner - the aforementioned Jaguar I-Pace was celebrated. The next big stop was at the Los Angeles Show in November for the annual World Car Test drives. The jurors vote on all eligible cars across all the categories in January - except Design - where a special panel of eminent design experts creates a shortlist.

A first for World Car was its own pavilion at any global motor show, when the programme touched down in New Delhi at the biennial Auto Expo. That is also where the Top Ten for World Car and Top Five in all other categories were announced. The jurors then have their second and final round of voting to further whittle down the finalists into the Top Three in the World. The cancelling of the Geneva Motor Show meant today's announcement did not take place from Geneva as is tradition. The final results are announced and trophies handed out to the winners every year in April, at the New York International Auto Show. That will be the next stop this year too, when the winners for 2020 will be made public.
