BS6 Emission Norms: 10 Scooters Which You Can't Buy Anymore

The Bharat Stage VI, or BS6 emission regulations have commenced from April 1, 2020. And while the country is locked down in the face of the coronavirus pandemic, the Supreme Court has relaxed the cut-off for registration of BS4 two-wheelers, and other automobiles, saying that 10 per cent of remaining BS4 stock can be registered till 10 days after the lockdown ends. Under the current lockdown deadline, some existing stock of BS4 two-wheelers will be permitted to be registered till April 24, 2020. After that deadline, only BS6 models will be sold.

Many two-wheeler brands have decided not to upgrade scooters to the BS6 regulations. The reason - some of these products were not hot sellers, and also updating them to BS6 would have meant a hike in the price and the update itself would have meant introduction of new technology translating to higher costs. While bestselling models have been retained by brands, some like Yamaha, have decided to focus on a segment above, introducing new BS6 technology, in the form of electronic fuel injection. Here's a look at the scooters which will not be available with a BS6 engine.

honda activa i

The Honda Activa i was lighter, and more affordable than the Honda Activa but failed to be as successful

1. Honda Activa i

The Honda Activa-i is based on the bestselling Honda Activa, sharing the same engine, dimensions and basic platform, but with some cosmetic changes, including new colours and body graphics. It was positioned as a more affordable and lighter version of the Activa, but the Activa-i failed to even come close to the popularity of the standard Honda Activa, or even the Honda Activa 125. In the BS6 era, it has been discontinued, and the Activa range will just have the Honda Activa 6G, and the new Honda Activa 125 FI.

honda cliq

The Honda Cliq was introduced as a scooter for rural markets, but it failed to be as successful as the Honda Activa it is based on

2. Honda Cliq

The Honda Cliq was launched in 2017, and was positioned as one of the most affordable scooters from Honda. Again based on the Honda Activa, the Cliq was positioned for the rural market, with Honda hoping to replicate some of the success of the Honda Activa in urban and semi-urban areas. However, it's the standard Honda Activa which proved to be the bestseller, even in rural areas, and the Cliq failed to 'click', and so it was decided to axe it altogether in the BS6 era.

3. Honda NAVI

The Honda Navi was a fun scooter, launched in 2016, and was much talked about as a completely made in India product, which was conceptualized, designed and completely developed in India. Initially, the Honda Navi became quite the rage, but soon its sales started falling. Even with an update to the BS4 emission regime, the Honda Navi failed to set the sales charts on fire. Eventually, Honda stopped manufacturing the Navi altogether, and it was only logical that it was given the boot during the transition to BS6 regulations.
