We had to check if this was an April fool's gag before we decided to write about the Learmousine. Let's be honest, who would think of making a party limousine out of a Learjet Bombardier. The king of the skies for the rich and wealthy is hardly what you'd want to see on the open roads, even in the US. Party car? Sure. Party bus? Always. Party truck? Why not! But a party bombardier? Now that's innovation. The Learmousine is real then and comes with wheels and is street-legal as well. The best part is that it's being auctioned later this year, which means you have an actual chance to own one.
So what is the Learmousine exactly? It's exactly what it looks like. A Learjet plane mounted on top of the vehicle's chassis, that has been 'tricked out' (pardon my reference to every car modifications TV show of the mid-2000s) to be fun on wheels. Built by Dan Harris, work on the Learmousine began in 2005 and the Harris and his team spent about two years designing the custom frame sturdy enough to support an actual plane's fuselage. The custom-built project is about 42 feet long and 8 feet wide. It also uses a custom-made suspension set-up built from scratch, while the electrical system was also developed from ground-up.
The team did face a number of challenges when it came to execution. Finding a paint booth big enough was a task in itself, while finding components specifically for this project was a challenge. But, the limousine industry did manage to help the team out. Inside, the Learmousine uses components from the first-generation Chevrolet Silverado. This includes a four-spoke steering wheel, instrument cluster, while there are four screens that offer different views around the party jet. A make-shift 360-degree camera, if you will. It also comes with four red toggle switches mounted vertically that bring in that aeronautical touch. At the back, the plane/limousine has been decked with what resembles a night club complete with the bright colours, neon lights and more. This is an 18-seater party bus that comes with a 42-inch flat-screen TV, infinity floor and a 17,000-watt sound system with speakers mounted inside and outside.
Power on the Learmousine comes from the 8.1-litre V8 engine sourced from Chevy. The motor propels the rear wheels and is likely to pack in dollops of torque to move this behemoth. Dan Harris and team also have used the speakers to play the sound of a jet engine, instead of a rickety pick-up truck.
The Learmousine made its public debut in 2018 and is now up for sale during Mecum's Indy 2020 auction at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in the US between May 12-17. Should the event not be called off given the COVID-19 pandemic, the winning bidder will not only take home the Learmousine but will also get a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD and a trailer long enough to carry the party jet. If you are planning to place a bid, do note it's going to cost an exorbitant amount. But how strong is your will to party in one of these?
