Auto Expo Excellence Awards 2020: Best Global Debut - Volkswagen Taigun

The 2020 Auto Expo had a bunch of global debuts. The lack of participants definitely did not dull the sheen of the Auto Expo. From concept showcases like the Haval Concept H, the Tata Sierra EV, Kia Sonet, Skoda Vision IN, Mahindra Funster to production ready models like the New-generation Hyundai Creta, Hero Electric AE-47 and the Volkswagen Taigun, all these models were shown for the first time at the 2020 Auto Expo. Choosing a winner for the best global debut was a welcome headache but after much deliberation, the jury members did reach a consensus and voted for the Volkswagen Taigun, which was much deserving!

The Volkswagen Taigun is a significant part of the Volkswagen Group's India 2.0 project, which will be led by Skoda Auto India. The Taigun is an India-specific model and it has been pegged for a mid-2021 launch. The Taigun will take on the likes of the Tata Harrier, Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and the like. Of course the car showcased here was a pre-production unit and the final product will be showcased with a host of changes on it. The model will be underpinned by the new MQB A0 IN platform that has been specifically developed for the Indian market. The big difference though is that compared to the T-Cross, the Taigun for India will be longer, more spacious and more comfortable, keeping the Indian requirements in mind.

(The Volkswagen Taigun makes a strong case for itself to be launched this year itself)

The Volkswagen Taigun has definitely started off strong in terms of buzz and word-of-mouth. There is a lot of anticipation and the model showcased was quite close to the production model as well. With the kind of interest that it has garnered, it will be a good idea to bring in the Volkswagen Taigun before its intended launch period of mid-2021. The other reason is that competitors like the new-generation Creta and even the Skoda Vision IN will be launched by then and if the Taigun comes in later, it may not be able to cash in on the buzz created now. So yes! We believe there is strong case for the Taigun to be launched this year itself.

The new Volkswagen Taigun will be one of the four new SUVs that Volkswagen plans to bring in the next couple of years. The Taigun is expected to draw power from the 1.0-litre turbocharged TSI petrol engine that will develop about 113 bhp and 200 Nm of peak torque. Transmission options will include the 6-speed manual and possibly the 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox too.
